How To Prepare For An Engagement Photoshoot

A Photographer’s Guide to Effortless, Elevated Images

Your engagement photos should feel like a celebration—not a performance. They’re about documenting the way you naturally fit together, the quiet glances and the soft laughter, and the feeling of being on the cusp of something bigger. As your photographer, my job is to make the experience seamless, intentional, and enjoyable. Here’s how to prepare so you can show up feeling confident and absolutely glowing.

1. Choose a photographer whose style you love (which you’ve already done).

The most important step is trusting your photographer’s vision. If you’re here, it means we already align on style and aesthetics, and that connection is what makes the images feel effortless.

I always offer a quick Zoom call prior to the shoot. This allows us to get to know each other better, crack a few jokes, and discuss your vision. Thanks to these consultations, you will feel like you’re meeting a friend next time we see each other in person, rather than some random girl with a camera... Trust me, this takes away SO MUCH stress!

2. Align your outfits and location with your photographer.

The mood of your session should feel coherent from head to toe. I always talk through outfits with my couples, looking at tones, textures and the overall vibe. A chic city outfit won’t feel the same in a forest, and a soft dress deserves a softer backdrop. We plan everything so the final gallery feels cohesive.

3. Prep your skin, but keep it simple.

Hydration is key before any shoot. Follow your usual routine and avoid trying new products. A hydrating mask the night before works beautifully, and a vitamin C mask in the morning adds a fresh glow. Hyaluronic acid keeps the skin plump, and a nourishing lip balm like Weleda Skin Food ensures your lips look smooth and healthy.

4. Treat your nails.

Your hands naturally show up in engagement photos, especially for closeups of the ring. Clean, neutral nails are timeless and photograph well. A professional manicure is always a worthwhile step.

5. Refresh your hair.

Whether you do it yourself or visit a stylist, freshly styled hair makes such a difference. Soft waves, natural curls or a sleek look all photograph beautifully when they’re fresh and intentional.

6. If you’re wearing something fitted, prepare thoughtfully.

For tight dresses or structured outfits, a lighter meal the day before can help you feel comfortable. Consider reducing fibre if you’re prone to bloating, and shaping underwear can create smooth lines if that’s something you prefer. It’s simply about feeling your best.

7. Makeup should look natural — but a touch stronger than usual.

Soft, natural makeup photographs beautifully, but both natural light and studio light tend to soften makeup on camera. A little more definition on the eyes, brows or lips still reads as natural while ensuring your features remain balanced in photos. Keep the glow, avoid unwanted shine and bring a small setting powder for touch-ups.

I am a huge fan of these products:

8. Wash your engagement ring.

A clean ring sparkles so much more in closeups. Soak it in warm water with a little dish soap for 15 minutes, then brush it gently with a soft toothbrush. Rinse well and dry with a microfibre cloth. It makes a noticeable difference.

And remember to hydrate your hands too — moisturised skin looks stunning in detail shots.

9. Travel light.

Bring only the essentials, like your phone or a tiny cardholder. I can easily keep them in my backpack. Without extra bags to watch over, you’ll feel much more relaxed and free to move.

10. Communicate openly with your photographer.

This is a collaboration. If something feels off, tell me. If you have an idea you adore, share it. Pinterest boards are genuinely helpful for understanding the mood or poses you love, and I’m always happy to explore them with you.

11. Make it a date

Your engagement shoot doesn’t have to feel like a chore or a formal appointment — think of it as the start of a lovely day together. Plan something enjoyable right after the session: brunch at your favourite spot, a romantic dinner, a walk by the river, or even a cosy coffee date.

When couples show up relaxed and excited, their energy is completely different on camera — more natural, more connected, and more joyful. Treating the shoot as part of a bigger celebration helps you feel present with each other, which translates beautifully into your photos.

12. Embrace movement

Some of the most meaningful, authentic photos happen when you’re doing something, not just standing and posing. Movement brings your personalities to life: walk hand-in-hand, give each other a playful spin, share a hug, lean in and laugh, or brush hair out of your partner’s face.

These gentle actions help you loosen up, forget the camera, and fall into your natural flow as a couple. The result? Photos that feel alive, warm, and genuinely “you,” instead of stiff or overly posed.

13. And finally, relax.

The most beautiful moments are often the unplanned ones. The shared joke, the spontaneous smile, the moment you look at each other and forget about the camera — that’s where the real magic happens. Enjoy the experience, enjoy each other and let the session unfold naturally.
